New hairy print, “Kataria”, from an original rya weave by Emelie Röndahl. Emelie is a weaving artist deeply entangled with the old Swedish rya-technique of figurative tapestry weaving, or “crying pixels”. Rya weaves are two-sided, with one smooth and one hairy reverse, transforming any motive into a distorted, grotesque mirror of itself. On paper, the hairy surface transforms again into a flat image of ordered chaos. Unlike a tapestry that is coming to life knot by knot, the screen graphic is build up from the bottom, layer by layer adding depth and shade until the whole image appears multiplied into one hundred unique copies.
